Park Terrace Renovation – Waikuku Beach

Before & Afters

Those who say “a builder’s home is never finished” can finally be proven wrong. Although it took eight years and a pending sale to complete the final touches, we couldn’t be happier with our beautifully finished home.

We purchased this 1950s, 70sqm bach in Waikuku Beach in 2015 with the long-term goal of a home extension and full renovation. Due to budget and a growing family, we took a staged approach and kicked things off in 2018 with the extension. We extended out into the backyard, adding a new laundry and a master suite, and the small extension out the front was to be our dining space. Ultimately, we doubled the size of our home. We used Shadowclad board and batten cladding for the extension and to reclad the original house as a nod to the home’s original plywood exterior.

In February 2020, unaware of COVID lurking around the corner, we removed our kitchen and got ready for stage two of our renovation. After several lockdown delays, we were able to get stuck into the big jobs, including re-piling under the existing kitchen, moving some internal walls to create a scullery, storage cupboard and office nook, and gutting the original bathroom. With a beautiful new kitchen and bathroom installed and new flooring and paint throughout, the interior of our home was finally complete. Over the next three years, the decks were built, soft landscaping followed, and a new roof for the original part of the house was the finishing touch.

Overall it was a really enjoyable process with plenty of help from our brilliant, local and trusted subcontractors, with special mentioned to the following teams at Aaron Harris Electrical, Laser Plumbing Rangiora and Kristen Reid Design.
